Choice in child care is a priority for my government and as a father of two I understand how important it is for parents. It certainly was for me. I'm proud to say Canada's new government is making progress in delivering on a universal childcare plan. The universal child benefit of $1200 per year is being paid directly to parents for each child under. Since the cheques started to be delivered in July 2006, Canadian families have already received 1.2 billion dollars. As well, under the child care spaces initiative, the 2006 federal budget committed 250 million dollars for the creation of child care spaces in 2007-2008. As promised in a speech from the throne, Canada's new government will work with the provinces and territories, employers and community non-profit organizations to encourage the creation of these new spaces. Canada's new government is moving forward with its promises, is getting things done to provide Canadians with real choices in childcare.
